I had a great question in follow up to the ' webcast that I delivered the other day, 'How you can you programmatically access the quota usage information from the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM)?' First of all, there is a native API for writing code to access FSRM data detailed at the following URL: That's a bit of overkill if you're just looking to script something. There is a WMI interface as well, but it’s only for FSRM events. So that leaves you with a pair of command-line tools that you can script in order to list your quota usage information:. storrept.exe - Used to manage storage reports. dirquota.exe - Used to manage quota usage Right out of the box the first command-line tool, storrept.exe, can generate a detailed XML report using a user-definable scope.
To see this in action, take the following example syntax and modify the scope parameter to your desired paths: storrept.exe reports generate /Report:QuotaUsage /Format:XML /Scope:'C: ' You can also specify mutiple paths in your scope using a pipe-delimited format like: /Scope:'C: Inetpub D: Inetpub' When the command has finished, it will tell you the path to your report like the following example: Storage reports generated successfully in 'C: StorageReports Interactive'. The XML-based information in the report can then be consumed with whatever method you usually use to parse XML.
It should be noted that storrept.exe also supports the following formats: CSV, DHTML, HTML, and TXT. This XML might be okay for most applications, but for some reason I wanted to customize the information that I received, so I experimented with the second command-line tool, dirquota.exe, to get the result that I was looking for. First of all, using dirquota.exe quota list returns information in the following format: Quotas on machine SERVER: Quota Path: C: inetpub ftproot Source Template: 100 MB Limit (Matches template) Quota Status: Enabled Limit: 100.00 MB (Hard) Used: 1.00 KB (0%) Available: 100.00 MB Peak Usage: 1.00 KB ( 2:15 PM) Thresholds: Warning ( 85%): E-mail Warning ( 95%): E-mail, Event Log Limit (100%): E-mail, Event Log This information is formatted nicely and is therefore easily parsed, so I wrote the following batch file called 'dirquota.cmd' to start things off: @echo off echo Processing the report. About Me I am currently working as a Programming Writer at Microsoft, and I have been with Microsoft since December of 1995. I worked in Microsoft Technical Support for IIS 1.0 through IIS 5.0, and as a Programming Writer for IIS 6.0 and IIS 7.0. By on October 24, 2007 in Did you know that Windows Server contains a file system quota component? “Of course”, you will say. It was introduced with Windows 2000 and is completely useless since it only allows for volume-level quotas. That is true, but at the same time it is nowadays quite irrelevant. Mini link craft 2.19. With the R2 update to Windows Server 2003 Microsoft finally got it right and introduced the optional component File Server Resource Manager (FSRM). With FSRM, folder-level quotas find their way into the (professional) lives of administrators who do not care for additional third-party filter drivers that are prone to destabilize production servers. On this note I could conclude this post.
After all, FSRM brings a nice GUI for managing those great folder-level quotas. But what about automation? For those of you who like to automate tasks and/or have to support large environments I want to provide a few examples.
Prerequisites In order to use FSRM you need either Windows Server 2003 R2 or Server 2008 with the component File Server Resource Manager installed. FSRM can be installed in an unattended setup by adding the following lines to the answer file (usually unattend.txt): Components SRM = On Settings Quotas on Home Directories – From the Command Line On Systems where FSRM is installed the command line utility dirquota.exe can be used to configure quotas. A very common scenario is to assign quotas to home directories. In order to do that you first need to define a template: dirquota template add /template:”Home 1 GB” /limit:1GB /type:hard The example above creates a template that, when assigned to a specific folder, hard limits that folder’s size to 1 GB. The template itself is saved under the name of “Home 1 GB” for later usage. You can, of course, create as many templates as you want.
The next step is to assign the template to a specific folder. That can be done with the following command: dirquota quota add /path:”D: Data Users Home UserA” /sourcetemplate:”Home 1 GB” The example above adds a quota of 1 GB (defined in the template above) to the home directory of UserA.
Being able to set quotas on single directories is quite nice. It does not help very much with home directories, though. What you need is the ability to tie the template to the home folder’s base directory and have it applied to every sub-folder auto-magically. That is exactly what the next command does: dirquota autoquota add /path:”D: Data Users Home” /sourcetemplate:”Home 1 GB” FSRM will now put the quota defined in template “Home 1 GB” on every subdirectory that gets created directly below D: Data Users Home.
